Red Ribbon Week: 10/28-11/1

What a great party! Thank you to our StuCo students, our StuCo sponsors, our parent and teacher chaperons, and the PTO for buying us pizza!

We are looking forward to Red Ribbon Week next week.  Here’s some more information about what to expect:

What is Red Ribbon Week?

Red Ribbon Week is a week when young people and adults all throughout the U.S. show their intolerance for drugs in our schools, work places, and communities.  Each year during the last week in October people show their commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle by wearing or displaying Red Ribbons.  Red Ribbon week was started to honor the life and sacrifices of Enrique (KiKi) Camerena who was killed while doing his job as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration in Mexico in 1985.  Hixson’s Student Council is using the week to also educate everyone about the risks of drugs and alcohol and why it’s important to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Themed Dress Up Days

Each day of Red Ribbon Week has a themed dress up day for students to participate in.

  • Monday October 28th: Twin Day “Don’t Pair Up With Drugs!”
  • Tuesday October 29th: PJ Day “Put Drugs to Bed!”
  • Wednesday October 30th: Favorite Team Shirt “Stay in the Game, Be Drug Free!”
  • Thursday October 31st: Halloween Costume “Say Boo to Drugs!”
  • Friday November 1st: Spirit Day “Show your school spirit and be drug free!”

Drug Free Poster Contest

Students are invited to draw a poster that visually represents one of the Red Ribbon Week themes.  The themes can be found on the Student Council board outside Room 115.  These posters are to be turned in to room 115 by October 28th.  Student Council will set up a display of the posters and a survey for voting at lunch on November 1st.

Check the Daily Announcements

During the morning announcements there will be a reminder of the theme for the next day and what the dress up day is as well as any activities that the Student Council will be putting on that day.  There will also be a daily fact during announcements each morning of Red Ribbon Week.  Students will have a chance to answer a trivia question about the daily fact during their lunch period.  If they answer the question correctly they will be included in a drawing for prizes at the end of the week.

Upcoming Dates

  • 11/5: School Not in Session for All District Students
